Intermediate Drawing

In this class we expand on earlier drawing techniques and focus deeply on the content of our work. I made four major projects in this class that are shown below.

Self Portrait

“Self Portrait”, graphite on paper, 8.5x11in

I have always been interested in people’s hands. When I meet someone new, their hands are the first thing I notice about them. You can learn a lot about a person from their hands: the way they move, how they rest, when they fidget, how groomed or weathered they are. These are my hands. I hope they help you to learn a little bit about me.

Project 1

“Growth”, graphite on paper and newsprint, 24x18in

I am stuck. I struggle to find creativity and come up with a clear idea. This piece taught me to stop thinking and just do. In the whirlwind that is my life right now, simple, repetitive drawing has become my therapy. I am growing into a new routine, a new artistic style, a new me.

Project 2

“It's All Falling Apart”, colored pencil on cardboard, 12x17in

When it feels like everything is falling apart, do you try to hold it up or do you just let go and watch it crumble?

Project 3

Project 3.jpg

"Uncertainty", charcoal and graphite on paper,  18x18in

As I graduate college and move on to the next chapter of my life, it feels like I am reaching out into the void. For the first time in my life I do not have a solid plan for the future. Not only are my personal plans uncertain, but in this pandemic, the entire world is facing uncertainty. The small circle pattern in this drawing can only be seen from a certain perspective when the light hits it in a specific way. If we look from a new perspective, the seemingly dark void of the future may start to take shape.
